Rhodium Plating

Rhodium is a bright white metal coating that is electroplated to gold to create a high shine and crisp finish to white gold jewellery. At Egoli Jewellers, we offer a Rhodium plating service, using a high-grade rhodium solution.

What is Rhodium?
Rhodium is a precious metal and part of the platinum family. Known for its durability and shine, rhodium is resistant to tarnish and makes an excellent plating for jewellery because of its white and mirror-like properties. Rhodium is rare and valuable, it is a small by-product of other precious metal mining.

When should I have my jewellery rhodium plated?
Gold in its natural state is yellow. White gold is created by alloying gold with white metals, to change the colour. White gold jewellery can show its original ‘yellowish’ hue if not rhodium plated. The time rhodium plating lasts varies widely, based on frequency of wear and activities; friction wears off the plating (anywhere from a few months to one to two years). You will notice when the golden hue starts to show through, this will usually be at the bottom of your ring, where it gets most wear. Rings will need to be rhodium plated more regularly than earrings or pendants as they have more impact with surfaces, hand sanitisers, soaps and perfumes.

If your jewellery is worked on, for example, a ring re-sized, and heated on with a torch, the rhodium plating will burn off. Rhodium plating is done as the last step on jewellery repairs and remodelling.

Our Rhodium plating services, including a clean and polish start from $90.00, using high-grade rhodium solution.

Is Rhodium plating hypoallergenic?
Yes. Its non-reactive, so does not cause an allergic reaction. Rhodium plating doesn’t contain any metals such as nickel that can commonly cause skin irritation. In fact, if you have an allergy to certain metals found in gold jewellery, adding a layer of rhodium plating creates a barrier and can reduce irritation.
