It’s been 15 years since Tim entered the jewellery industry. A shy 17 year old ‘surfie’ walked into egoli place of gold, asking for a job – we couldn’t resist his mild manner and unique approach and, history was made.

Tim’s love of jewellery was initially inspired by his desire to create. Wood and metalwork were his first loves, with a natural progression to precious metals and stones. His inspiration now comes from nature, from changing seasons and light and, from the strong shapes, delicate features and organic elements that he sees while surfing and hanging out at the beach with his young family.

Unique engagement rings are his specialty. For Tim it’s not only about trends but also about the design and quality of the craftsmanship. Passionate about platinum and diamonds, he is well known for his attention to detail. Over the years Tim’s fascination with metal and gemstones has led him to pursue and experiment with different methods of manufacture. Platinum, an unforgiving metal, is his favourite for the very challenges it poses. He often combines it with rose or yellow gold, along with intricate solder work and piercing, to create his unique engagement ring designs. Every element of his unique engagement rings are handmade with very little reliance on casting or other manufacturing processes. He wants to be able to hand make everything all of the time. Technology and computer aided design in jewellery is not something he relates to. Traditional handcrafting methods with tools that haven’t changed in hundreds of years is what he prefers. He feels strongly about creativity, uniqueness of design and the ability to stand out from the crowd.

Traditional diamond engagement rings are always amazing but if you want a unique engagement ring with coloured gemstones or interesting metalwork, there are countless options for something a bit more alternative. Why have the same design as everyone else when you can explore your individual creativity to design an engagement ring that is unique to you?

A proposal is a special and intimate moment, an engagement ring the ultimate expression of love. Being involved in the design and appreciation for the art of a unique engagement ring handmade by someone with their heart is an experience that is unique and meaningful.

After serving  his 5 year apprenticeship, and, with his newfound skills he  started his own handmade jewellery business in the suburbs of Johannesburg where his unique vision and jewellery design perspective saw him flourish and grow. He expanded from one store to two and was always well known for his honesty, his individual pieces and, his exceptional craftsmanship.  This is also where he began to impart his wisdom on young apprentices – he has to date trained 12 jewellers,  many of whom won awards while training with him and, who have since moved on to start successful handmade jewellery businesses of their own.

In the 1980’s at the height of political unrest in South Africa, he moved to Perth, Australia with his young family.  He set up in his garage at home as a handmade jewellery designer and manufacturer.  His strong sense of family kept him here for several years with customers coming to visit him in the lounge room while the kids played in the room next door.

Tony was joined in the business by his wife Nicki and they opened the shop in Glengarry Shopping Centre where they have worked together for almost 20 years. The kids who played at home while the customers visited are also involved in the shop.  They all relish the delivery of unique designs and  outstanding and caring customer service which has led to much repeat business.

Tony has escaped becoming jaded by the industry and is still greatly motivated by the challenge to produce something entirely different but still functional and practical.  He is passionate about producing lifelong pieces of personalised handmade jewellery –  pieces that will be worn for generations to come – today’s treasures, tomorrow’s heirlooms and future antiques. He is constantly exploring and developing new visions for his work, getting inspiration from travelling and from walking and cycling in natural environments. Tony is all about quality and is well known for his attention to detail and willingness to ‘have a go’ at producing, restoring  or repairing jewellery that no other jeweller is prepared to attempt. He never cuts costs and is fanatical about finish.  An extraordinary  jeweller and a master craftsman in every sense of the word.

A Magical Workshop in Australia

When we moved to Australia, dad worked from home so, every day after school I would warily enter the inner sanctum of jewellery workshop.  This was actually little more than a portion of the double garage  and an adjoining tin shed but, to me it was a place of creation and wonder, an alchemist’s lab filled with all sorts of fantastic devices and beautiful shiny things.  I used to sit and watch dad for hours, me talking about school and him explaining to me how he was putting a ring together or, what held the stones in place or, how he got the metal to shine so brightly.  I always marvelled at how he managed to create such beautiful, intricate, custom jewellery from what started as an unimpressive lump of yellow metal, by carefully rolling, bending, cutting, twisting and filing it into shape.

Working with my dad and travelling the world taught me more than just technique—it shaped how I design. From delicate rings to bold tribal pendants, every piece tells a story. Jewellery isn’t just decoration; it’s culture, memory, and expression. My work blends global traditions with personal experience—each piece a reflection of where I’ve been and what I’ve learned.

Learning the Craft – From Apprentice to Artisan

In 1998 mum and dad opened their store in Perth making custom jewellery. For me this meant a perfect weekend job to earn a little extra pocket money.  I cleaned, made coffee, swept the floors and sometimes, if I was really lucky, dad would sit me down and let me have a go at repairing a piece of old chain or let me ‘help’ him make a wedding band.

After graduating high school I decided to take things a little more seriously at the jewellery store.  I started slowly, working 3 days a week learning the basics but, after 3 months, I was hooked and, begged to be signed on to a proper 5 year apprenticeship.  I loved the sense of accomplishment I got when I finished each piece and I loved being able to hold something beautifully crafted in my hands and say ‘I made this’.

After completing 4 years of this apprenticeship under the expert tuition of my father, the travel bug bit and, I moved to Johannesburg to complete my final year.  This was a fantastic experience during which I learned a great deal – not all of which was jewellery related!  During my time in Joburg, I decided that travelling and making custom jewellery was what I wanted to do with my life. I spent a year backpacking through Africa which was an amazing, eye opening experience! With my itchy feet well and truly scratched I headed home to Perth and and back to the family business.

Since then I have alternated between working in Perth, saving my money and,  travelling and working abroad.  A year in  Vancouver, Canada taught me a whole new set of skills and techniques learned from the crew at Van Yperen Jewellers, Another year riding my bicycle down the Great Divide Trail in the US and into Mexico  taught me a whole new skill set I would not have learned sitting in a workshop in my home town – the ability to interact with and understand people of all cultures, self-reliance, patience and resourcefulness. There were also many different sources of inspiration for jewellery design on this trip, the majestic Rocky Mountains and the temperate rainforests that cling to their flanks, diving the stunning tropical reefs in Belize, sailing down the Mexican coastline, the amazing Aztec motifs and architecture plus, all the beautiful silver Mexican jewellery I saw all over the country. I have been inspired by my travels to  Indonesia – its tropical beaches and the amazing jewellery they produce using skills long forgotten by the western world, India with its yoga ashrams, its amazing colours  and its beautiful jewellery of bright yellow gold and amazing gems.  The wild expanses of Africa and the rugged majestic beauty of New Zealand inspire me to make large organic, wild pieces.    And, the mountains, snow and ice of the Andes and the incredible Incan jewellery with its tribal motifs and icons make me want to work with platinum and diamonds!!

Worldskills Australia is a national competition that showcases young Australians skills and talent within their trade, with the purpose of promoting, recognizing and celebrating individuals within skill based careers.

I have always loved competition. In 2012 I won Apprentice of the year, in 2013 and 2014 I placed 3rd and 4th respectively in Worldskills. In September 2014 I entered a piece in the Jewellers Association of Australia’s 3rd and 4th year Apprentice/Student Design and Craftsmanship competition. I didn’t win but was one of the top 3 finalists. I love to challenge myself and push the boundaries to see what I am capable of. I am always amazed at what I can actually achieve under stress and pressure!

I always knew I wanted to be a jeweller – when I was a child I made ‘jewellery’ from pasta shapes, shells and anything else interesting that I could find. Art was and is a passion for me – drawing, woodwork and metalwork. As soon as I started my 4 year apprenticeship I was in love and, have never looked back. I love the idea of being able to create something and, for a design to flow organically and develop as I work. I am inspired by nature – specifically ocean and sky – I love to photograph these as well! I love the contrasts of light and dark and the constant movement in both. I guess I’m a bit of a romantic too! Jewellery occupies such a unique place in consumer culture – no other wearable item has so much emotion and romance tied to it. I love being part of that!
